When food isn’t about enjoyment

Hi Reader,

It’s been a while since you’ve heard from me. I thinks it been a couple of years since I sent a real message. I’ll send a message re-introducing myself soon.

You can expect to get messages more frequently, but I can’t promise you how often right now.

Over the past couple of years I’ve been learning to live with Long Covid. It’s getting better but there’s still a ways to go. Since I’ve been recovering, I spend most of my time resting.

I can’t do the things I used to do but my brain won’t stop. I’ve got lots of notes and voice recordings I’ve made of random thoughts and ideas. Sometimes it’s just a couple of words other times is a longer exploration or rant. Instead of just talking to myself, I thought I’d share some of my reflections about food and wellness. Let me know what you think.

Most wellness practitioners have a story that starts with a health crisis. Either they got sick, or someone close to them did. They tried all the things and finally found something that helped—and wanted to share it.

My story is a mix of that. I’ve always been interested in food and I enjoy cooking. I find it really grounding and calming. And I’ve also navigated my own health ups and downs.

But right now? I’m recovering from Long Covid. I’d love to say this crisis has led me to finding a solution that I can share so you can feel better too. But I’ve tried lots of things but there’s no magic solution.

And all the things I learned about in my nutrition classes and the things I used to do to keep me healthy and active haven’t fixed it (which is a topic for another time.)

Right now, my relationship with food is more complicated than it’s ever been. I eat because I have to—not because I want to. I have to eat at certain times to take my medication, even when I’m not hungry. I eat so I don’t add stress to my body by losing anymore weight. Most days, I don’t move enough to really feel hungry.

There are only a handful foods I can eat and trying new foods takes more energy than I have mot days. I don’t have the energy to prepare the kinds of meals I used to love.

Food used to be a big part of my life. It was a source of joy, creativity, and connection. Now, food is self-care at the most basic level. It’s really about survival. And that’s okay.

This is where I am right now. If you’re here too—whether because of illness, depression, overwhelm, or any other reason—you’re not alone.

Sometimes nourishing ourselves looks different than we expected. Sometimes it’s less about optimization and more about just getting through the day. Sometimes the most radical act of self-care is simply feeding ourselves without judgment.

I want you to know that wherever you are in your relationship with food and wellness right now, it’s valid. You don’t need to have it all figured out to deserve support and understanding.

Have you ever gone through a season where food became just another thing to manage? I’d love to hear how you made peace with it—or if you’re still figuring it out. Just hit reply and let me know.

Take care and be well,
